Fabulously Thrilled with Fabulous Finds Beauty Box

Guess what recently dropped on my lap??

fabulous finds package
Ok, I must be the slowest of them all in posting up this subject but since I missed the launch, I guess there are positive sides to being slow - one: that I am publicising Fabulous Finds, our first local beauty box subscription service when the hype has died down somewhat, and two: I get to write about how it looks like sent to our doorstep! :)

fabulous finds - a box inside a box
As you can see in the top most picture, the box looked worn out from shipping. But, I was surprised to find that there was another perfect-looking box inside the delivery box. Awesome, right... or shall I use the word, fabulous??

fabulous finds - awesome packaging
When I opened it up, I realised that Fabulous Finds puts the fine details as their top priority. Everything felt impeccably gorgeous which makes it a little sad when I really have to untie the ribbon and remove the pink 'ff' sticker. It's like I had just ordered myself some luxurious pair of sexy lingerie from VS.

ff - overview
An overview.

fabulous finds - products in box
Most of the products that came in the beauty box are of a nice deluxe sample size that could last for at least 2 weeks to a possible 2 months of daily use. And from what I gather, subscription is at RM35 a month, which looking at the brands, I'd say the subscription is a pretty nice deal. My only qualm is that my sensitive skin may not agree with at least half of the products in this pack.

ff - list of items & price
And if you look at the list of items and they're full-sized price, there's no way that I'd replenish the items once the sample finishes. But, it helps a lot for my reviews because they are plenty enough to show some form of result and I am able to provide views on say, Beaubelle that people hardly use because they are not easily found over the counter. Taking Beaubelle as an example, the products are decent, although I think there are many others that work well, are easily found and not so costly.

I am sure you've read about Fabulous Finds if you've been reading the rest of the #evurl ladies here, here, here, here, here and here. You can even visit their website and be a fan of their fb page for updates and information on their services. I am not one who is very familiar with other beauty boxes subscription but I liked what Fabulous Finds promises their subscribers - good deal, new & best beauty finds every month, helping the less fortunate ladies out there (who help pack the boxes for us!), steal deals for 3/6/9/12-month subscriptions, and down to the fine details of hiring a reliable delivery service to ensure the boxes arrive in pristine condition. I'm like sold, already, if not for the facts I've listed in the above paragraph ;)

But here's my personal scoop on Fabulous Finds with Hui Ling, the founder of FF...
  1. How did the idea came about to start up FF? - after reading many beauty bloggers write about beauty box subscriptions across the US, UK, Australia, Hong Kong & Singapore, I thought it was time to start a similar service here locally. More importantly, I would like to have a social enterprise where employment opportunities are provided to women from disadvantaged backgrounds to supplement their income. Incidentally, the name Fabulous Finds came with hope that each beauty box will continuously intrigue subscribers as we bring only the best and latest samples from high-end and niche brands.
  2. Did you think there was a demand for a beauty box subscription in Malaysia? - I was confident of it having taken off in so many countries and Malaysian women asking why there weren't any such service available locally. With a subscription, women are able to try the samples out before splurging on full-sized items and introduces them to brands or beauty products that they would not have otherwise used. And, as the brands are reputable beauty brands, subscribers gain access to the best offering in the market. But that's not all that we hope to achieve as we aim to provide a platform of sorts for knowledge sharing on our facebook page.
  3. How did you initially envisioned the support from beauty lovers? Was it a risk you were willing to take? - We envisioned enthusiastic response to FF and we have been right so far. We had heart-warming messages from women all over Malaysia thanking us for doing this, they took pictures of their boxes and post on our fb page saying how delighted they are to have received the boxes. There was certainly a risk at the very beginning but we had faith that we would receive a good support for this venture.
  4. Is there any specific target number of subscribers? - definitely but we also would like to grow our subscriber base. We have priced ourselves at an affordable price of RM35 per month to allow as many Malaysian women as possible to have access to this service.
  5. Any views on the beauty industry in Malaysia and the awareness of Malaysian women on beauty? - I think the beauty industry in Malaysia is maturing and competition for consumer attention is quite stiff. Malaysian women are increasingly beauty savvy and better educated, keeping themselves up to date with the latest products and offerings hence, demanding effectiveness of products and not easily convinced to adverts.
  6. It's been a month since the launch. How's it been? - the support has been tremendously encouraging with some subscribers purchasing our boxes as gifts. And since the products come in various types, it is natural for our subscribers to share the box with friends and family members.
Apart from getting fabulous stuff monthly, you would also be able to personally interact with the founder as she loves receiving feedback. All your enquiries will be replied personally, making this service absolutely unique.

I am looking forward to reading more about FF in the coming months. I may not subscribe to the service just yet but I will not discount the possibility. We'll see... in the mean time, I would like to try to finish up as many products I have as possible so that I don't continue to accumulate. It's such a bad habit to have so many good stuff but with no desire to finish them up, don't you think?

Have you signed up for the service yet? If you haven't what's holding you back?

The Clarins Skin Spa @BSC

I have to admit that I love Clarins' body products. I've been using them since after my first baby was born and I would occasionally use them whenever I feel that I need the extra help. You don't need to just think of cellulite for you to use their body products as there are quite a variant even for daily use. Best example would be their Relax and Tonic bath gel. They're excellent! I love their smell and the way their aroma make me feel at the end of a shower.

Recently, I've been buying Clarins' face products again after awhile and I was lucky that they had a redemption scheme where each RM100 of products purchased will allow you a 10 minutes free treatment in Clarins Skin Spa. I only found out about the promotion around 10 days before its due date and thus, only managed to get myself 30 minutes worth of treatment. Hence, I opted for a complimentary body scrub... and since I booked myself for that treat, I thought why not also book myself for a facial.

I have to admit though, that Clarins hasn't been a favourite facial destination before this. I don't know... I just never thought their facial treatment suits my skin in the long run, simply because they do not do extractions. My skin is different than many and although a lot of my friends swear by the treatment from Clarins, I on the other hand would only pay them a visit once in a blue moon when I feel that I just want a pampering session without having to endure torturous extractions. And, that will only happen when I think my skin is problem free, which is very very rare.

But, what I do love about Clarins Skin Spa is the fact that they have large treatment rooms, with a huge closet for you to keep your stuff.

And since I was doing a body treatment as well, the room is attached to a spacious shower booth. Very comfy, I must say, and I was naughty enough to actually use both shower gels, one after another ;)

I must also say that since this is my first visit to the Clarins Skin Spa after probably a year, I am pleasantly surprised at the facial treatment. I never remembered that their treatment can be a little comprehensive. I mean, they not only massaged my hands, they also apply many stuff on my hands. They even scrubbed my lips and they did it with very gentle strokes. Should I say that they had probably improved their techniques and added a few steps to their usual facial routine?

They started with a relaxing movement all over my body, which is a standard in any facial treatments. I don't remember each and every step because I totally enjoyed the session since my body was dead tired from working the day before, as an *ehem* emcee *ehem* for a very special event ;)

I chose the whitening treatment and I thought the scrub and mask that they used on my face was working its magic since I can feel my face tingle. I know for a fact that since they do not perform extractions, they do have this special exfoliation product that they layer on your face, which may be as effective as extractions, for some.

I like that they paid special attention to my decolletage... they are not stingy in the amount of products they slather neither are they ignorant when massaging the shoulders. It felt like heaven and I surprised myself awake when I thought I heard my own snore! Haha...

All the aches on my back was somewhat cured since they switched on the heating blanket under me which warmed up my body and relaxed my tired, aching nerves. I left the place feeling so energised and my face was glowing... what a perfect end to a weekend.

What I also love about the Clarins Skin Spa in BSC, they do not do any hard sell and before this when I came to try out some products, they were very willing to give out samples. And I thought that was a very good move because I came back 2 days later to purchase some items.

Anyways, after the treatment, the therapist informed me that their Christmas coffret will be out by November 2011 and there will be a special 10-day promotion for members. I saw their Christmas coffret on their latest newsletter and I think there are interesting gift sets that you can find, if you are a fan of Clarins. Do check out with them if you need more information regarding the members promotion or coffret sets.

By the way, my facial treatment was priced at RM228 per session and I was told that during the members' promotion, you might enjoy a buy 4 get 1 free, with complimentary 5 eye treatments as well to go with the package.

I think after this experience, Clarins Skin Spa might just be in my list of favourite facial treatment destination....

Have you tried any treatments from Clarins Skin Spa? If yes, which of the treatments you enjoy most?

Sealer Diaper & Baby Mall: fuss free efficient service to your doorstep

Ok, this just arrived on Friday, 1 October via delivery and I just have to share this info with you.

Remember a previous post about my disgust with a hypermarket which made it difficult for me to get our usual stock of Sealer diapers? Well, it was good that it happened the way it did as I managed to get information on Sealer and found an online wholesaler who's selling it for so much cheaper - you'd have to order a pack of half a dozen, though, at RM150 only for the entire pack + RM15 delivery charge, which equals to you only paying RM27.50 per pack of 36 (L size) compared to about RM35-RM39 retail, depending on which supermarket you go to. For them to deliver it straight to your doorstep, I say that this is damn convenient!

Jada being a busy body since she probably hasn't seen a Sealer pack for awhile already...

Our discovery with the Sealer disposable diaper started when Jada was born. At that time, the goodie bag I received after I checked out of the hospital contained one trial packet of 2 Sealer diapers. I didn't think much of it since the packaging at that time looked a little weird - it was bright orange with leopard print, and so I just kept it aside until much later when I decided to give it a try.

And, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the package because that was when I discovered how soft the diaper felt and that it was super absorbent. The diaper felt cottony plush to the touch, it has attractive, bold animal prints and the elastic band on the waist and hips felt super soft and comfortable. Jada didn't develop any reaction to it and when I saw the price of Sealer in our local Giant hypermarket, I was even more impressed that it costs lesser than the famous MamyPoko or Huggies.

The new Sealer Smart now comes with a new look and newer 'technology'.

Previously, their animal prints looked like this but I guess they have now come to a softer approach. Kinda look like strawberry milk from Dutch Lady or something ;P

The waistband is wide and unlike some diapers that look like a hikini, Sealer diapers cover the hip-area more widely.

If you'd like to give it a try, I am happy to recommend this online wholesaler because I made the purchase after 12 noon on 29 September and it arrived just 2 days later.

Giant Hypermarket @Giant Mall, KJ: Shame on You!

This post is probably so overdue. I had wanted to make it known to everyone about this issue but I was allowing some time to further observe, especially after highlighting this twice to the staff of Giant Hypermarket at Giant Mall, Kelana Jaya, PJ.

See, I love the Sealer disposable diaper. We got 2 pieces of sample from Sealer on the day Jada was born and we instantly fell in love with it. The texture boasts soft plush cottony finish and it looks super cute with animal prints all over the diaper. The size is huge in that it totally covers Jada's buttocks unlike some of the diapers in the market which is narrow in size. Best of all, it is priced very competitively - cheaper than Huggies or MamyPoko, yet works just as good.

Come to think of it, whenever Jada uses this diaper, she'd hardly get any diaper rash. In fact, there's no redness at all even after 10 hours of wear at bedtime. We're now putting her on other brands here and there since it is difficult to find Sealer except at Giant KJ just nearby where we live. Even if we do find Sealer at Cold Storage outlets, their price is so much higher that it makes better sense to just switch to another brand like MamyPoko in Giant.

So yes... we have some problems with it recently, which I believe has been going on for at least 4-5 months. See the below photos to learn why.

This photo was taken on 23 May 2010, after I felt extremely frustrated with them as I had highlighted this matter twice before. I didn't manage to complain to the store manager, though, as I always come by after office hours and their cashiers would tell me that the office is closed. What further irks me is that their cashiers are all part-timers and cannot help you at all even with a simple enquiry. Note the rack on top with Sealer packs in all sizes, except Large (L). You can see one L size at the bottom rack, very clearly and obviously displayed in only ONE unit. ONE. Why? See photo below...

There is a tear at the pack and I believe that people are not buying this due to safety and health reasons. Like come on... an opened pack may have allowed germs and bacteria into it... worse, even cockroaches! But... Giant refused to replenish their stock of L-sized Sealer diapers, probably until this particular ONE unit is sold off! We've been going there since 4-5 months back and every week when we come by for our milk/diaper shopping, we would keep seeing only this ONE unit of L size.

We're so flustered by this fact and the sales assistant we spoke to gave us a bewildered look, as if there's nothing wrong in displaying it there, and that they were out of L size diapers for Sealer, except for this one unit!

Today, I shall not keep quiet anymore because it totally irked me when I could see plenty new stocks of Sealer, in all sizes - Newborn, S, M and XL but.... where is the L size, you may ask??....

Colourful and bright packs in all sizes, no?

4 levels of diaper (you can click on the picture for larger image) and just look at the lowest rack where something is peeking out, shouting for someone to discover it... it is 2 August after my last photo opportunity with one opened pack (and 5 months since I first bumped into it)..... the below photo will explain everything....

Yes, the same pack, now not displayed very obviously, yet no sign of newer stocks of L size Sealer diapers. Now tell me if I should be less irritated.

I hope Sealer - the manufacturer/distributor can check on this matter because I find this highly unacceptable.

I mean, just because one hypermarket is able to provide customers with cheap-er goods, that doesn't mean that we, the customers, should be subjected to goods of compromised quality. In this case it is totally something unacceptable and highly unethical because it is a baby product and we all know how important it is to ensure safety, health and cleanliness of what would be used on babies. If such simple factor is being compromised just so Giant could maximise their profit, can you just imagine what you're getting from their house brands? Are they willing to risk the health and safety of their customers in order to make bigger bucks?

I am totally appalled by this.

Kampachi @Pavilion KL: A Great Dining Experience!

Gosh... this blog needs a more constant attention and I vow to do that from now on *wink*

Recently, I was given the task to plan for our 3rd anniversary dinner. Now, I have always mentioned to Mr Husband that I love Kampachi. It's been awhile since I went there and we've never gone there together since Mr Husband is not a big fan of Japanese food. But... since it spells luxury, it was one of the choices in our list of places for good food, good ambience and perfect atmosphere for a celebration.

Though I love Japanese food, I must admit that the last time I went to Kampachi was probably more than 3 years ago at the Equatorial KL. Reason being, due to my other half who's not very fond of Japanese food... and then I was pregnant (and breastfeeding) that it wasn't advisable for me to consume any raw food :(

So, I jumped at the prospect of going there again and that saw me doing some simple research on the place. I would always google up places/issues before providing a thorough plan and I found out that Kampachi also has an outlet out of Equatorial Hotel - at the Pavilion KL. Since it would be one of our rare dates without the kids, I thought it'd be nice to walk around window shopping rather than that cold, boring atmosphere of a hotel.

My main concern would be the same quality and freshness of the food they serve that one would expect out of Kampachi, be it if it was in its usual comfort of the Equatorial Hotel or otherwise. And that 'research' in the net was almost frustrating because many people, as I found out through the numerous photos in their blogs, would have fried stuff or the famous handmade soba noodles instead of writing about how fresh the sushi and sashimi spreads were. My concerns were heightened especially when Kampachi themselves position the Pavilion KL outlet a little different than the ones situated in Equatorial hotels as they cater for the busy working groups and serve food suited for a quick meal - suitable for those having a rush lunch hour.

I am glad though, that I finally found 2 blogs who not only wrote about their tempuras and teppanyakis but also filled me in on the fresh sashimi spread available at the outlet. That sealed the deal and I instantly made a reservation, clearly stating that I wanted a nice table as it was to be our anniversary dinner ;)

When that day came, we arrived at Pavilion's Level 6 where most of the best dining experience are located, got a gorgeous table for just the 2 of us and I loved the feel of its outlet. We snapped some photos, asked the waitress to snap our picture and she was totally excited to know that it was our 3rd anniversary dinner.

moi beaming with happiness and trying out a very red lipstick for the first time after i found out something new about Mr Husband's preferences :)

the California sushi we ordered, to allow Mr Husband to also enjoy the taste of sushi.

I couldn't tell Mr Husband that he was trying some delectable eel but I couldn't help blurting that out to him either hehe... that unagi means eel. Nevertheless, it was delicious and he went on eating several more :D

This is my uber-favourite - the sashimi set. All fresh portions and they told me that the chef made me additional portions due to one of the fish portions were too small a size.

zoom in to one salmon slice. fat, fresh and juicy... yummeh!

This was what Mr Husband had since he hates anything raw. I was so glad that he found this Beef Teppanyaki set perfectly cooked to his taste buds. The beef was juicy, tender and tastes heavenly and that everything else served on this tray was to his liking. Additional points to Kampachi and more brownie points for smart wifey ;)

At the end of our meal, the assistant chef came to our table, congratulated us on our celebration and told us this was what they could whip up for us quickly for our dessert... it was doriyaki with fresh mango slices and ice cream - on the house ;)

I am glad Mr Husband thought the experience was worth every ringgit spent - the food he had was good (mine was too, definitely, even though they were raw haha!), the table was perfect and the service was excellent.

I wouldn't say much about the ambience because there is no view of the KL city (if that's what you're expecting) but I went there for a good time with my husband and the good food that I knew I was getting. Therefore, Kampachi would always be a favourite Japanese restaurant for me. The best part was when a person who is known for not particularly liking Japanese food, mentioned to me that this was one venue that we should visit more often. I am glad that everything went well but more so I guess also due to the company you're with, don't you think? *wink*

Kizsports @1 Utama

On Raya Haji last Friday, Mr Hubby and I decided to check another children's early development centre to see if any of them is agreeable to Jada. Since it was a public holiday and they basically did not have any programmes on a Friday, they gave us some options for a Saturday or Sunday class.

We decided on the Saturday's class since it is held early at 10am where we know Jada would be fresh and eliminate that risk of crankiness. The trial class is free and I said to Mr Hubby that they're either so confident of their classes for them to offer a free trial or that they're genuine in letting parents try it out since not all children can agree to the classes. Either way, we both benefit from this since the free trial class is only fair rather than us having to pay RM48 for a class that did not benefit Jada one bit.

We were greeted by Fariza and the classroom was smaller than expected. But Jada warmed up the minute we entered the room as Fariza knew what to do to make the children calm. There was another girl who was there for the first time who also didn't quite like the experience in another children's early development centre they previously went to.

books strewn on the floor was a perfect way to calm any tensed
nerves (if any) in Jada since she loves books...

checking out what another girl was reading hehe...

Fariza was quick in identifying a lot of things in the children that came in that day. Even before I realised that Jada might be sleepy, she already pointed that out to me. She could even guess that Jada is still breastfed from some 'characters' that Jada was displaying.

I liked that Fariza took her time, talked to the new kids, and properly explained what we were supposed to do and why those exercises were introduced. Sure, Jada had her cranky moments but only because she wasn't familiar with the new atmosphere but those moments were manageable as she was happy to explore all the play sections. The time she cried was when Fariza touched her or when we kinda 'forced' her to try other activities in the room.

But unlike the previous experience in another centre, she found her favourite spot and I must say that that was a good development. Who knows, in next week's class, she might get herself familiar with other stuff in there and gradually get used to the routine.

she must have felt this bouncy movement as I was always on
a gym ball while being pregnant with her. Somehow she had
found her favourite spot here! ;)

I also liked that Fariza spoke to us parents on our concerns and kept telling us all to not force our babies to move on to other activities if they do not want to. And with that, Jada was allowed to take her time to understand an activity, process the information in her tiny brain cells and act upon the processed information. Therefore, she was able to enjoy the experience.

she found the guts to explore other territories after she became
bored with the gym ball...

One activity that was so similar to the previous children's early development centre that we visited, was the bubbles session. Previously, she was not given the time to understand what she was supposed to do and was expected to be forced by parents to push her into doing what she was required to do. But here in Kizsports, the facilitators kept blowing bubbles to her where at first, she'd only expect the bubbles to come to her, then graduated to going after the bubbles and realising how much fun it was being in a play session.

Jada was so excited to have all those bubbles blown towards her

she finally learnt to go after the bubbles instead of waiting for
them to come towards her.

This positive vibe continued further after that when Jada gleefully walked over to the nearby 'playground' and explored everything, not even a care in the world that she hadn't yet had breakfast. With that, we were able to reinforce what was learnt in class earlier rather than having to wait another week.

Jada was put in the Little Walkers class and classes are set for an hour. However, the first 10 minutes is spent getting the children to warm up before actual activities were performed.

We signed her up instantly after she has had enough... and happy that she spent an additional hour playing at their playground. It was also good to know that for the next one year, her entrance into their playland is FOC, anytime.

running away from daddy!

I'm so glad that this part is finally sorted.

If you need to know their fees structure, all their play sessions in different levels of age-groups require a RM40 Annual Administration fee, a one month deposit of RM160 and a RM160 monthly fee. However, when we registered Jada, we were given the option to pay a package of RM360 for 3 months (RM120 per month). Kizsports has many other interesting classes like pre-school, taekwondo, ballet and much more. Your child will enjoy free unlimited entrance to their playland when you sign up for the play and pre-school classes, and other siblings can enjoy member rate for the entrance into their playland.

P/S: I was so elated that she enjoyed herself there and totally forgot that I was supposed to check out Muzikgarten before making a decision. *sigh*

Gymboree @Bangsar Village

An update from the previous review I did on Gymboree @ Tropicana City Mall...

An ex-colleague told me that I should have brought Jada to the outlet in Bangsar Village because the facilitator there is much warmer to kids and they make the activities really fun. I wasn't sure how much different it can be but today, I had the opportunity to see it for myself as my best buddy, Nicole, decided to send her daughter there while we have our occasional Sunday date.

What I saw in the 10am play class for Level 7 children, was that the class was pretty crowded but the kids looked like they were really having fun. But I must agree to the statement made by my ex-colleague that the facilitator was really good with children. She was so into teaching the kids, wanting the kids to have fun and learn, and I could feel the atmosphere being so lively. She did have personal interactions with the children even when there were probably around 15 noisy children running everywhere.

everyone taking turns to crawl into the colourful 'tunnel'.
it looked quite chaotic but with so many kids, chaotic would
mean something positive, don't you think?

Nicole said she had enrolled her lovely Isabelle for the entire play and music package. I even saw an old classmate with her son.

So, I guess if you really want to check out Gymboree and believe that this is where your children should go to for their play and learn sessions, I would suggest that you make your way to the one in Bangsar Village, Level 1. I cannot promise you anything but at least you'd feel better to know that the teacher tries her very best to make the session fun and exciting.

But, I would still like to add that Nicole shared with me some tinge of disappointment that there weren't any interactions among the children or parents. I guess parents would always hope that play sessions like these would teach the kids to socialise. But with protective and cautious parents nowadays, there is no way of seeing kids making friends if there are no encouragement from parents. So with that, I still think that the environment is not really suitable for my Jada. Still, what may not work perfectly for our toddler doesn't necessarily mean that it is not good for yours. No two children are exactly alike.

If you'd like to know an overview of how much you'd need to invest in your children's early development in Gymboree, below is the fee indication (the fee schedule is correct at time of publication):

Gymboree @Tropicana City

I was pretty excited with our plans yesterday with Jada, our 16-month old baby. A full 16 months of breastfeeding and staying home with a mom who works from home is enough to make her very attached to me that she even rejects her daddy most of the time... don't even ask me about her acceptance to strangers or even relatives... not even atuk or nenek can get close to her for more than 20 seconds without her pushing them away!

In view of this, and the fact that she has gotten very demanding to the point of a need for constant attention when mommy's in the middle of work, I decided it is time for Jada to socialise with other children her age, that she needs to be independent (to at least play on her own while mommy works nearby) and the need to understand that mommy cannot always meet her demands. Thus, we've started to look at several nearby nurseries where I intend to send her to at least for 2-3 hours a day during the initial stage, eventually leading to a half-day of play/development session every day. That would really help her gain some self-confidence and the ability to understand that mommy wants her to learn some independence.

Since I don't think a nursery could accommodate such a demanding baby, I thought of enrolling her to some play/music courses for babies to start her off slowly rather than do something too drastic. As her mom, I know her too well... that she'd do something at her own free will and not when she's forced... she has always been that way since the day she was to be born.

So, last Thursday we went over to Tropicana City Mall nearby where we live, and headed over to Gymboree. Jeanette, the administrator, was very helpful in answering all my concerns and queries, and even allowed Jada into the play area just to test her out. Jeanette was really good with Jada although the little one truly didn't welcome whatever stuff Jeanette was doing. I liked the atmosphere and Jeanette's warm demeanor was truly commendable. We instantly booked a trial class on Sunday (that's yesterday). Although I initially planned to put Jada on muzikgarten, I accepted Jeanette's advise to put Jada on a play course first, for her to face her fears in meeting strangers and let her explore new territories safely.

A day before yesterday, I googled up some reviews on Gymboree (which were written some 2 years ago) and found a couple of negative remarks. I took note of them but didn't want to consider them that seriously. However, I was a little worried and shared it with Mr Hubby but we decided to experience it before deciding on anything.

So, in we went again yesterday and after 5 minutes or so, we realised that the reviews I read were true albeit them being written years back. Over time, we also realised that the programme wasn’t suitable at all for Jada especially since she has not been exposed to such rigorous activities before. Apart from that, there are other points which contributed to some few concerns that we weren’t entirely happy about.

The main issue perhaps was the lack of time for one particular activity for a beginner like Jada to familiarise herself and be assured that the activities are actually fun. Those other toddlers in that play group were all boys with the youngest being 20 months old. At 16 months old, Jada was an early entrant to the group. No single effort to make her feel welcomed by the facilitator was also a contributing factor to Jada not warming up to any of the activities – the kids were made to climb the slide, walk on a narrow wooden plank that’s unstable and asked to participate in grabbing colourful hand-pieces and place them into a basket.

As the time for each activity was so limited, even before Jada could finish walking along the wooden plank, she was supposed to already move on to slide down. But how can we make her enjoy the activity when she started to cry at the wooden plank and every other kids already moved on elsewhere? There weren’t anyone who’d encourage Jada to finish her task, and the facilitator didn’t communicate to the children or parents on a personal level. In the end, our objective to have her explore on her own was thwarted as she reverted back to her introvert self and grabbed for my boobies for comfort.

Don’t get us wrong… we weren’t spoiling her at all. We wanted her to enjoy the lessons and so we would take her in when she needs the assurance as we want her to feel that we are not pushing her to do what she doesn’t want to do. So, as soon as she calmed down, we encouraged her to move on to other activities – which the kids were already climbing stacks of colourful steps and jumping down towards a plush orange material. I tried sitting on the orange thing and she seemed to be interested with the cushiony substance but as soon as we took her to the steps and made her jump, the heavy bout of crying and screaming started again.

Then, everyone converged into a small circle where the facilitator blew bubbles, clapped and sang for the next 10 minutes. Jada just watched everyone reach for the bubbles and burst them but was probably very cautious to mix in. However, when everyone started singing and clapping, she began to warm up and participated in the activities. At the end of that last session, she happily got into this parachute-like material while daddies and mommies pull the colourful material in circles.

it was a total turn off when the facilitator pronounced Jada's name, "JA-EY-DAA"

When we saw how happy she was, we decided to put her onto the slide again just to see whether we've kinda warmed up her engines. We were wrong into thinking that she would because again, she started to scream.

Jeanette saw that and tried to soothe her but I guess it was a little too late. Jeanette even blamed us parents for allowing her to cling on to us when she cried, which I truly detested because I know how many times I reminded Mr Hubby to not pick Jada up, and to let her discover her abilities. However, this was her first time and it seemed unfair for us to just let her cry out loud without giving her any assurance.

Therefore, I had to tell Jeanette that the lesson may not be suitable for Jada. Jeanette didn’t even bother to ask about my concerns and suggested that I come back for their music class next Sunday since I mentioned that I'd like to enrol her into a music class.
My take on Gymboree Play programme for Level 4 (from 16 to 22 months):

1. Each section (the play, the clean-up, the strength training and touch & singing) is too short especially for a baby who’s never done this before. No amount of assurance can soothe her since that task is given to her parents and not the facilitator. For me, it defeats the purpose of wanting her to mix around with other kids when all she wanted to do was to cling onto me.
2. Two-thirds of the session seemed too rigorous for a beginner like Jada. For a baby who’s hardly done any jumping and even so afraid to step down our split-level kitchen though it’s only an inch difference, I expected something milder for a start. Maybe they should have one beginner session just to allow her to familiarise herself to the surrounding and have more time to focus on what she was supposed to do rather than simply following what everyone else had to do.
3. At the end of the session, we were a little surprised to note that the supposedly 45-minute course ended much sooner than that… probably it lasted only a good ½ hour. Thus, we were quite disappointed.
4. It would be better if the facilitator in charge would introduce herself and have personal contact with each toddler. And much better if a little bit more special attention is given to a new entrant like Jada, at least for the first two sessions. Having her parents constantly at her beck and call doesn’t help her learn anything quicker.
5. If you’re looking for interaction among kids, then this programme is also not suitable for your child since that doesn’t occur at all and even parents themselves do not mingle with each other. The only parents we talked to was a little apprehensive to answer our question on the age of their cute boy. So, if that didn't make you comfortable, how do you think your baby would feel?
6. As much as Jeanette seemed to understand kids quite well, you must not just take her advise for an expert. I have always believed that as parents, you would understand your children’s needs best. So, do not commit too soon and go for trial classes in other early development centres to see which one fits your toddler’s needs best.

climbing up at the start
of the programme

ball to encourage her to walk

further coaxing needed as
Jada refused to budge

seeking comfort at mommy's
boobies

Jada stared at the bubbles and
other kids grabbing them
finally warming up and
enjoying the parachute ride

Next up, I guess we would be checking out other centres. Seeing how well she responded to the short musical session, I am starting to trust my initial instinct to have her warm up to a music programme. Muzikgarten, perhaps?

Seesmic - Twitter client for Android..

I have never tried Seesmic before. I know they have a twitter client for the pc and web and i've read that there are people who prefer the Seesmic Web than the default Twitter web access. I haven't got the chance to try that out. But seriously, with the abundance of native twitter client being churned out for the PC, Mac, Linux and what have you, i find myself using Twitter.com less and less.

Anyways, Seesmic just recently announced the Android version of their twitter client. As soon as i saw it being tweeted i just had to give it a go. Currently i'm using the default twitter client that came with my phone. HTC Peep. It gets the job done. I also fiddled around with Twidroid, Twitterride and a bunch of other clients just to get a feel of what options that you have out there.

timeline screen

profile..

replies..

I must say that i'm liking the clean interface of the application. The app is presented into 4 main tabs. You have quick access to your timeline, replies, messages and profile. Clicking Menu will give you access to the compose option and also to the settings tab. The app gives you the standard twitter related options. Photo service is provided via yFrog, Twitpic and MobyPicture and video is provided via yFrog, Twitvid and YouTube. You also get your usual url shortening via Bit.ly, j.mp and Tinyurl.

click menu to access settings

Standard options..

normal services..

You can also set the notification options as with other twitter apps, you can set the refresh intervals and other bits and bobs.

Now so far the user experience has been pleasant. Seesmic for Android is a full featured twitter client with a lot of promise. There's still some areas for improvements. It still doesn't have direct access to the List function which was introduced. So far i believe only Twidroid have implemented that option in their client. And i think u can't do a search for tweets. Which is a bit off. But then again its only version 1.0 so you can only get better.

Seesmic for Android is available FREE from the Android Market.

Lancome Beauty Institute @Bangsar Village II

My idea of a facial is one that is not clinical. I would like my facials to be a multi-sensory experience of touch and smell, and I always would look forward to those relaxing shoulder massages since I hardly have time for a full body massage.

Since I’ve been to Clarins and Estee Lauder’s salons before, my visit to Lancome’s Beauty Institute was without high expectations. My main aim was only to have a facial treatment before Raya comes and that I was going to enjoy the 30% off for my first facial – at RM40 cheaper than the salon I usually frequent to, I would be just happy with that 90-minutes relaxation being pampered by a beauty therapist.

Bangsar Village is a little away from home but I just had to take my chances with this salon since it’s only a week before Raya and I am sure other salons would already be fully booked. Parking was a breeze at BVII and LBI was really easy to find.

As I arrived in front of the salon, I was a little perplexed as I didn’t know where their door was – there wasn’t any ‘OPEN’ sign and the entire outlet was decked in see-through glass. But I reckoned that I should walk over to the end of their shoplot and walah… the glass door slided open hehe…

One of them got my name and accompanied me upstairs for a skin consultation. She didn’t introduce herself neither did she wear any name tags. She asked me if I had had my breakfast and I told her I was fasting. The waiting hall was huge with comfy sofas and tables. Despite telling her I was fasting, she asked again if I wanted any drinks. Judging from that, I think she just isn’t well trained for small talks but I have to give her credit for trying to make conversations.

I was asked to fill up their form and had to wait for their machine since someone else was also using it at that time. I had nooo problems with that as she handed me some beauty magazines to flip through.

The consultation came and I was struck by how high-tech and accurate the machine was… I mean, I’ve gone through something like that in Leonard Drake and Clara’s a long, long time ago but all were very stereotype. I mean, I’ve always, always told people (beauticians, especially) that my skin type is oily. O-I-L-Y but time and again, all of them would tell me that it is impossible to have such oily skin since I have passed that 25 mark almost 10 years already. Apparently, those above 30 would normally have combo skin with some dehydration/sensitiveness here and there. Even when my skin gets all shiny and oily, some beautician would tell me that the foundation I was using is the wrong type or that I didn’t moisturise well bla bla bla.

This time however, the first sign of me falling in love with this salon was how the machine affirms my understanding of my own skin’s character. At 34 years of age (oppps… not yet 34, not until December!!), my skin’s oiliness is much higher above the average level all other women of my age. And since I have not been using proper range of skincare, I may have stripped too much of the surface oil, making my pores enlarged most of the time as they try to absorb more moisture from the surroundings. Hence, making the upper dermis really sensitive and dehydrated despite moi experiencing all-day shine.

All that time, she still hadn’t introduced herself and I was too engrossed with what I learnt about my skin that I hadn’t thought about asking her name.

One advantage of having such oily skin is that the reading showed my skin’s firmness and elasticity faring much higher than an average 30-something year old woman. *yeayyy* thus, anti-aging care isn't at all necessary although it wouldn't hurt to start.

She told me that I really need to treat the oiliness yet increase the hydration. So I asked her – how was I able to do that when the moisturisers basically make the skin dry and matte. And she went on to tell me that I need to treat that yet use something else to increase hydration. Ooohhh kayy… I was a little skeptical as I foresee the amount of products I’d need to overlap. And, just as she failed on the small talks, she wasn’t very good at explanation either due to having just a fair command of the English language. Thus, some detailed questions that I have (I sound like a journalist there) like blotchy skin didn’t have a proper explanation from her. But I wasn’t going to be a bitch that day and so I thought I’d just get on with the treatment.

As I read a review here, I went with the intention of getting a whitening facial hoping that my chicken pox marks would lighten a little so that it won’t be too visible in my Raya photos. But I was surprised when told that the whitening facial may be a little too rich for my skin and that I should have my skin properly cleansed first. I was a little disappointed with that but I wouldn’t want to argue either.

When I found out that she was going to work on my face, I asked for her name. Tiffany. My name is Tiffany. Hehe. Ok… that was sorted.

I was brought into this room, all draped in white curtains and just a relaxing chair in the middle. The lighting was in pink, to welcome me in. There was a huge locker for me to put my stuff and I was given a pair of comfy slippers to wear. She left the room and told me to press this one switch in the room once I was ready. Ok.

She helped me onto the chair and I fell in love at how the chair felt totally comfy under me. Compared to other facial salons (with the exception of Leonard Drake as they put a pillow under your legs), you are not subjected to hard flat bed. This one will ensure that the chair (when turned flat into a bed) would follow the crevices of your body, making it perfectly comfortable.

Then, Tiffany turned on the specially composed music that has been customised according to the treatment. Hmmm… the music actually sounded more like those from drama minggu ini days or cheap documentaries you get from FINAS. Hehe. But but but… as the treatment progressed, the music changed into soothing tunes which later just gets switched off from your senses as you enjoy the beauty treatment.

And that came the best parts… for someone who totally enjoys her facials, I noticed all the little details.

Tiffany went on to clean my face, first with the milk and after that, with a Pore Focus cleanser, suitable for my skin type. I’ve always loved the subtle scents in Lancome’s products and this cleanser has micro beads in it where I feel totally cleansed and refreshed. Then, she used a scrub on my face and as if she knew my bad habit, she advised me not to press on my skin hard when scrubbing as the scrub already contained properties to lift off dead cells. I liked that she layered my face with a piece of tissue after every cleansing ritual to take off the excess and then wiped off with wet facial cotton rather than rinse using a sponge, to prevent unnecessary tugging of the skin. Only after the final scrub did she use the sponge and I loved how warm water felt on a thoroughly cleansed skin.

Then, it was the steam and I wondered how she’d perform the extraction on me. I’ve always cringed that part since everybody else I went to had not scored high points in that department with me.

I was pleasantly surprised though that instead of leaving the room while my face was under the steam machine, Tiffany performed what must be one of the best hand massages I’ve ever experienced! If that was a special technique specifically from Lancome, I say, kudos to Lancome (and good job, Tiffany!). She was firm but knew what felt good. I didn’t have to undergo any pain in order to feel good. This already scored high points in my book.

The extraction part came with a wonderful surprise. All these while, my previous beauty therapist was the only person I’ve ever met who could extract my milia, even those painful ones near the eye area, with me feeling less pain. But Tiffany, well… she did better than that! She didn’t need to prick deep into the skin. All she did was a simple quick pierce and the oil seed came out and moi feeling minimal pain. What I liked about the extraction process was the fact that Tiffany had used 2 facial cottons dipped in their signature rosey-scented toner and pressed them together to pinch out my blackheads and whiteheads. That, is so much better than the feeling of cold metal prong being prodded on my skin. Another plus for Lancome (and Tiffany!) *yeayy*…

When that was over, Tiffany used a machine similar to the one used in Leonard Drake where it helped eliminate surface bacteria on the skin. But instead of doing just a shoddy sweep, she rolled in onto every part of the face, twice. *more points*

A peel mask was then put on my face (not a peel off mask but a peel) and Tiffany then left the room. Oh, plus points again for putting on Primordiale eye cream on my eyes (and lips too!) before putting on the mask. This similar process was also done before steaming my face.

10 minutes was probably up and the mask was rinsed away and the lights in the room was instantly dimmed. Tiffany used a relaxing cream and worked her firm hands on my face and upper body.

Instantly, I fell in love with the salon (and Tiffany! hehe…) and my initial intentions of wanting to explore other salons quickly diminished. This salon is here to stay ☺ It was such a good massage and I didn’t feel like I needed more… it was like the method was done perfectly for one to feel just right… that’s good, isn’t it? I’m not sure how long that lasted but after the massage, I felt drowsy and ready to sleep.

Next, she put a hydrating mask on my face. Now, this is one unique experience too since most salons would already double mask me. Here, they do a mask at a time. I fell asleep this time and Tiffany spoke to me in almost a whisper to tell me that she was going to clean my face when that time was up, finishing with such a nice soothing warm wipe on my face, neck and shoulders.

After that, she put on Primordiale Eye Gel to my eyes and lips area, the Hydra Zen serum, Aqua Fusion moisturiser and sunblock with SPF50. Plus points for slathering all those not just on the face but décolletage area as well! Then, the bed was transformed slowly back into a chair and before I got up, Tiffany gave a nice head massage to fully wake me up.

I got up and realised that the entire room was enclosed in white curtains and I couldn’t see the locker hehe. Tiffany pulled one part of the curtain to unveil the locker and then only did I realise the rationale behind it… I guess they had wanted the customers to feel like you’re the focus… and your head won’t feel cluttered seeing all those props, gadgets and products everywhere. I guess that had worked beautifully! All you see is a chair in the middle with curtains all around *applause*

As they had a Raya promotion, Tiffany then explained to me a mix & match package where I would get double the value I’d sign for instead of the usual buy-5-get-1-free. The amount was a little hefty to me but I was game for the double return that I would be rewarded with (plus that heavenly massages that I would get!!). And… they allowed me to pay a partial sum, where the balance is due at a much later interval. That scored another plus point in my book ☺

Really, I am in love.

I love it that their facials cost an average RM180 (some are lower, some as high as RM300 for the whitening facial) yet I get such excellent service and an accurate reading of what my skin is like so that a more effective treatment can be administered. Secondly, I loved that they didn’t rush on me… Tiffany took her own sweet time and experienced enough to know what needs to be done. I forgive her for her lack of communications skills with such firm hands ☺ Thirdly, I am okay with the extractions done on my face and appreciate those little details that Lancome created for a better and less stressful experience.

I love that they didn’t push me to buy any products but since I wanted to revamp my current skincare, I felt so well understood as they didn’t recommend that I buy from the same range. Instead, for the first time ever (which you may not receive such advise from the counters) my problem skin is dealt with more accurately – cleanser for oily skin, toner for sensitive skin, serum from the hydra zen range to increase hydration and the whitening moisturiser that will help slough off dead cells gradually while preventing that tired/dull look and evens out skin tone. Best of all, as pointed out by the one when I returned home, I didn’t look like I had the chicken pox again unlike how I’d look after every facial (and since it is in Bangsar Village, I was able to check out the clearance sale in Zara as well *yeayy*).

I guess if you know that Lancome products work well on your skin, do give Lancome Beauty Institute in Bangsar Village II a visit. Nope, this post wasn’t sponsored and I write truly from my personal experience.

So here’s the number – 03 2287 1084 / 03 2287 1087. It’s on the ground floor and if you’re not sure where you are, it’s the other side of where Coffee Bean is located (I had to walk a bit since there was no directory on site). There’s also one outlet in The Curve but I do not have their number.

Oooohh… I’m still in love as my skin still feels supple today. After more than a year of neglecting my skin, the wait was all worth it ☺
